3 Techniques for Cleaning Ball Gags

While an excellent addition to your bdsm toolkit, many users may be concerned about how to ensure their ballgag stays clean enough to be safe for their ball gagged sub. Keeping a silicone ball gag clean can be as easy as washing a dish!

What type of ball gag material is easiest to keep clean?

A leather ballgag head harness is pictured draped over a piece of driftwood.

For the health and safety of the ball gagged sub wearing the gag, we recommend only using ball gags made from medical grade silicone.

Medical grade silicone is the only gag material that offers flexibility for comfort, temperature resistance for sanitizing, and is free of potentially harmful chemicals that may leech into the wearer’s mouth during use.

It's easiest to keep a ball gag clean if it snaps out of the head harness, separating it from the leather so you can focus on keeping it clean without worrying about your bdsm leather, which has different care requirements.

There are many different methods for cleaning your ballgag, depending on if your goal is keeping it clean or thoroughly sanitizing. We suggest cleaning your ball gag or ring gag after every use, and making sure it’s sanitized between different wearers.

While you can certainly sanitize your ball gag after every use, it’s the most important to make sure it’s sanitized between wearers, or if it’s exposed to any bodily fluids other than saliva. If you are generally playing with the same partner, washing with soap and water and sanitizing every 4-5 uses is sufficient.

The following techniques assume a medical grade silicone ball gag that can be removed from the head harness. They may degrade lower quality plastics and are not recommended techniques for cleaning leather.

Routine cleaning with soap and water:

  1. Wash the gag after use in hot soapy water, using a soap that is safe for use on food utensils. Dish soap is a great option.
  2. Using your hands or a soft sponge, lather up the ball gag thoroughly, rinse, and repeat.
  3. If you have one of our ball gags, which are designed with breather holes for extra play safety, you may want to immerse the entire ball gag in hot, soapy water as you clean it, so the breather holes get a rinse.
  4. Dry with a clean towel and return it to your bdsm toolbox for future fun!

Sanitizing with boiling water:

  1. Bring a pot of water to a boil on the stovetop.
  2. Drop in the ballgag, reduce the heat to simmer, and let gently boil for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Turn off the heat and wait for the water to cool down before retrieving the gag.

Sanitizing with the dishwasher:

  1. Silicone ballgags are dishwasher safe! Put the ball gag in on the top rack with whatever other dishes or toys need a cleaning.
  2. Run the dishwasher as usual.
  3. Some people may prefer to have a separate dish washing load specifically for sanitizing bdsm toys, but the normal cycle on a functioning dishwasher gets hot enough that it doesn’t create any safety concerns to wash your ball gags alongside your dinner dishes, so it’s a matter of personal preference.

Tip: All of our medical grade silicone ball gags have a snap in, snap out design that works with our head harness for hygiene, safety, and extra fun as you are able to swap in a variety of ball gag, ring gag, and bit gag sizes and styles.
